Abstract:
|
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security estimates the size of the nonimmigrant population residing in the United States (i.e., temporary residents) using administrative arrival records together with estimates of visit length. This paper discusses recent improvements in the methodology that make fuller use of available data, eliminate a source of error, and add a mechanism for calculating an arbitrary point-in-time estimate, without requiring additional data sources. Both methods use visit length estimates produced from merged arrival and departure records. Missing departure records, a problem with both methods, are discussed in the presentation.
