Abstract:

In the summer of 2009, a supplemental sample of younger establishments was added to the Job Openings and Labor Turnovers (JOLTS), a monthly survey conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Previous research has shown that younger establishments have a greater churn rate (hires + separations), than older stable establishments. The supplemental sample allows younger establishments to be included in the earlier sample, and their information is captured monthly. During the past year, these younger establishments are being monitored. Current analysis is being done on younger establishments' rates for testing the hypothesis that the rates are different from the older establishments, and the effect they have on the overall estimates produced by JOLTS.
