Abstract:

Clustered binary data are very common in many scientific and social studies. The intraclass correlation measures the similarity among the observations within the class and has attracted considerable interest in literature(Ridout, Dometrio and Firth, 1999; Zou and Donner, 2004). In this paper, we propose one new estimator and compare with existing ones through extensive simulations. The numerical results show that our estimator is unbiased and has smaller standard deviation. The estimator is also robust against different data generating mechanisms. Another finding of the simulations is that the alternating logistic regression (ALR) estimator is a good estimator that can be used to estimate the intraclass correlation from clustered binary data.
