Abstract:

University of Washington undergraduate statistics students are matched with faculty or "outside" mentors to be active members of research teams (RAs). This program has been in place for several years. The recruitment and matching process may begin with instructors of our core undergraduate courses identifying potential RAs, their skills and interests. Simultaneously, potential mentors are contacted - department faculty, affiliates and adjuncts, and other local researchers, identifying current research projects, desired skills and nature of the work for an undergraduate RA, time frame and time commitment. Careful matching of students to researchers maximizes success. Benefits for the students include increased confidence, real research experience, increased interest in graduate studies, and resume enhancement. These RAs truly contribute to their research projects.
