Abstract:

Dental trainees on the post DDS graduate level typically have a modest exposure to statistics, often no more than a single basic course. However, many of these individuals participate in research, and all need to be informed consumers of the dental literature. Multivariable statistical modeling represents one important area where even the statistical neophyte needs some degree of sophistication. The described approach makes use of wireless computer-driven audience response technology, internet resources, formal instruction, and literature review, with the latter including both instructor-facilitated and student-initiated components. Another important aspect is the integration of topics such as multiple regression, logistic modeling, survival modeling and meta-analysis into a research design course which emphasizes application of the evaluative principles of evidence-based dentistry.
