Abstract:

The 2007 Census of Agriculture (COA) was the 1st to offer online reporting and near 100K COA reports were received online. We examined traits of web respondents and quality of their data. Web respondents were smaller, newer, more urban farms with high speed internet. Their data was also better quality. Thus, several experiments were designed to target and increase web response during the testing for the 2012 COA. Comparisons were made between: groups 1) mailed a cover letter and instructions for online reporting, WITHOUT a paper form; and 2) mailed a request to report online WITH a paper form. In addition, a subsample was given a duedate when follow-up contacts would begin. A subset of respondents who had reported having high speed internet was included in all groups. Response rates (both on-line and overall) and plans for increasing online reporting for the 2012 COA will be discussed.
