Abstract:

Since the pioneering work of McCullagh (1980), the proportional odds model has become a standard approach to the analysis of ordered categorical data. Motivated by the well-known tonsil size data discussed by McCullagh, we consider the behavior of this model when there is an anchor category of the covariate(s), for which the distribution of the response variable may be assumed known. We exhibit a surprising simplification of the model in this case and show how it can be fitted without specialized software. Some further consequences are discussed.
