Abstract:

The creation, analysis, and dissemination of high quality data are core elements of the scientific endeavor. First, data only have utility if they are used. Second, scientific analyses must be able to be replicated and validated by other researchers. Third, the concrete application of scientific concepts must be transparently communicated. Fourth, expanding data use, promoting repurposing and minimizing duplication is fiscally responsible. Lastly, junior and senior researchers, policy makers and practitioners need to have the capacity to go beyond examining tables and graphs to a point where they may develop their understanding of the complex response of humans to rapidly changing social and legal environments (Lane, Heus and Mulcahy, 2008). This roundtable discussion will highlight emerging technologies for data dissemination, specifically secure remote access to confidential microdata.
