Abstract:

Propensity scores are useful for balancing many covariates. However, some variables, those more predictive of the outcome, are more important to balance than others. No aspect of the propensity score or associated methodology would indicate this crucial set of covariates to an analyst. We develop methods of fitting prognostic scores, combinations of covariates determined by several dimension reduction techniques, for use in propensity models. These methods and associated diagnostics draw equally from the dimension reduction literature and from the literature on observational studies. Using these diagnostics, one can extract individual variables and combinations of variables of central prognostic relevance to improve the ability of propensity score matching to balance covariates.
