Abstract:

In many rural areas a high percentage of the residential addresses are post office boxes. This precludes use of postal service and similar list sources. To do an area-probability survey you might have to list all of the area. In rural areas this can be very time consuming and difficult, since many roads go long distances without any indication if there are homes in the area. An alternative is to use lists counties have compiled for emergency purposes, often referred to as 911 or E911 listings. Westat is conducting a survey on an Indian reservation in two rural counties. We obtained the 911 listings for both counties and spotted the houses on maps using GIS software. We have conducted a census of these locations for inclusion into the survey. This presentation will report the results of this stage of the survey showing the accuracy of the lists.
