Abstract:

Analysis of population-based case-control studies is challenging because of the extreme variation of the sample weights (mainly between sampled cases and controls). In such situations, popular design-based weighting techniques (such as Horvitz-Thompson (weighted) estimating equations) are known to be inefficient. We study the performance of different weighting methods proposed in the sample survey literature and propose a new weighting approach which incorporates modeling of the sample weights into a design-based framework. The new approach is investigated and compared to the existing approaches in simulation study. We also study the robustness of the approaches to misspecification of the model assumed for the sample weights. Finally, we apply the methods to the National Cancer Institute's U.S. Kidney Cancer Case-Control Study in order to identify risk factors for kidney cancer.
