Abstract:

In two-stage adaptive design, the second stage sample size depends on the observed data from the first stage. The literature focus on the control of the Type I error rate and pays little attention the adequate initial sample size. In this research, the specification of initial sample size is explored. The efficiency of two procedures are evaluated: the likelihood procedure and the fix-weight procedure. The power loss of the fix-weight procedure is studied. The likelihood procedure is proven to be in a complete class, while the fix-weight procedure is inadmissible. Power comparisons are also performed through simulation.
