Abstract:

As more and more students take their laptops to class, instructors are ambivalent about online note-taking, due to concerns about distractions provided by the Internet. We present a highly structured method of teaching introductory statistics that incorporates PDF slides, guiding students towards an optimal balance of listening and typing (or writing, in the case of students who choose the pencil-and-paper approach). Specifically, MS PowerPoint lectures feature numerous examples for which the responses on the students' PDF slides are to be filled in. The laptop note-takers use Adobe Reader to type into strategically placed empty text fields, while others simply write in the blanks on the traditional four-per-page handout slides. Besides reducing paper consumption, this method proves advantageous in its successful engagement of students who prefer to use a keyboard while they learn.
