Abstract:

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small endogenously expressed non-coding RNAs that regulate target messenger RNAs in various biological processes. In recent years, there has been abundance of studies concentrated on the discovery of new miRNAs and identification of their mRNA targets. We apply the relative R2 method proposed by Wang and Li (2009) and the results show the method can successfully increase the proportion of confirmed targets from the selected potential targets. The confirmed targets are validated by TarBase and the results in the literature. Finally, we explore that confirmed human miRNA targets in the literature usually have small correlation coefficient. It not only can provide a simple and intuitive procedure but also can compete with the existing methods to select the true targets that do not expose significant statistical evidence in terms of the standard statistical methods.
