Abstract:

Business Employment Dynamics are a quarterly set of time series data constructed by longitudinally linking micro level cross-sectional data gathered by the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages. Business Employment Dynamics are useful in analyzing labor market trends not only because the data are based on the universe of employers in the United States, but because these data show the underlying cause of the net change in private sector employment. Jobs are gained at expanding or opening business establishments, whereas jobs are lost at contracting or closing business establishments. The four subcomponents of the Business Employment Dynamics: expansions, openings, contractions, and closings are independently seasonally adjusted for 179 series. These time series are concurrently seasonally adjusted using an airline model with X-12-ARIMA software.
