Abstract:

In the comment section of the Survey of Attitudes Toward Statistics (SATSĀ©) pre-test, some students describe difficulty in answering the questions because they do not know about "statistics." Also, when attempting to explain why Value and Interest decrease Pre-test to Post-test (in many courses), some people have wondered if the drop is due to students' initial conceptual understanding of "statistics" being different from what they experience in the course. In order to understand students' perception of "statistics", we will present results from individual interviews and focus groups as well as responses to short answer questions. By understanding students initial perceptions of "statistics", instructors maybe able to address any confusion and help to improve students' attitudes toward statistics.
