Two-phase and counter-matched sampling are case-control study design options when exposure or exposure-correlate information is available for the base population. We describe the similarities and differences of the two methods and discuss when one or the other may be more appropriate. It is shown that, while the two-phase marginal likelihood may be used to analyze counter-matched data, it appears to be less efficient than the conditional logistic likelihood . Further the balanced counter-matched design is more efficient than a balance two-phase design. On the other hand, counter-matched data requires that all cases be included, so that two-phase sampling is the appropriate option when sampling from case-exposure cells is desired.
