Abstract:

After graduation from the Harvard University, Barry served as a faculty member at Yale for about ten years, followed by the senior Mathematical Statistician position at the NIEHS for about another 10 years, and the rest of his life he spent in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, as the Chair of the Department of Biostatistics for 10 years, continuing as Professor of Biostatistics thereafter until his retirement. In this process, he entered the field as a statistician, moved to statistics in environmental health sciences and with this rich background he was able to lay down the foundation of toxicogenetics and genomics at UNC Biostatistics. As a chair at UNC, he was approachable by all faculty and students, receptive to their needs and suggestions, helpful for their development, and above all, consistent with the basic role of biostatistics public health research.
