Abstract:

The number of students taking college introductory statistics courses and Advanced Placement statistics courses has risen dramatically in recent years. This growth, along with increased use of more sophisticated statistical methods in client disciplines, has created demand for further coursework in statistics. But unlike in other fields, in statistics there is currently no single, standard, content-driven, "second" course. In this panel discussion we will present topics that should be covered in a second course, how to increase student interest in a second course in statistics, and how to implement a second course in a tight economic environment. Panelists will also describe second courses they are using now. A discussant will respond to the panelists' presentations, and there will be time allotted for an open floor discussion.
