Abstract:

Indices have a long history, particularly in economics and social sciences. They are used to measure complex phenomena because they characterize the state of the phenomenon in one or a few numbers and this facilitates the study of the evolution over time and space. There is recent interest in the development and use of indices for measuring environmental quality. For example, Environment Canada recently developed a Water Quality Index (WQI) for use as a reporting tool on water quality status and trend at the regional and national levels. The objectives of this paper are to: a) describe the Canadian WQI
