Abstract:

An online introductory statistics course that utilizes technology to create unique interactive learning environments will be described. In the course, technology is used to enable students to collaborate and learn from each other, in addition to learning from required course materials and the instructor. Technology is also introduced into the course as a way to (a) better illustrate important statistical concepts, (b) provide students with tools to describe and analyze data, and (c) provide students with opportunities to replicate-in an online environment-hands-on activities that are traditionally used in a physical classroom setting. Here, special attention will be paid to the way in which the ASA-endorsed Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education (GAISE) have been implemented in one key component of the online course: small-group discussion.
