Abstract:

We describe a methodology and software to compute respondent weights for complex samples that finds an optimal set of non-negative weights satisfying a given set of restrictions on the weights. The problem is formulated as a constrained optimization problem where the objective function is a quadratic function of the weights. Empirical results from a comparison of this weighting methodology to a raking approach will be presented to illustrate the advantages of the methodology, focusing on its capability as well as weight efficiency.
