Abstract:

This paper highlights the development and validation of instruments capturing the constructs underlying a model of leadership, team processes and individual outcomes in a technology-mediated environment. The factor loadings were based on the use of the polychoric correlation (K. Bollen & Maydeu-Olivares, 2007; Gilley & Uhlig, 1993). The instruments are reliable with Cronbach's alpha between 0.72 and 0.9. Tests of criterion validity, using bootstrapped data, revealed the presence of a significant moderating effect of the degree of virtuality on individuals but not on team processes. The virtual environment had no significant main effect on team processes. The preliminary findings suggest that interventions should be directed at promoting good working relationships with the individual rather than the team. Interventions designed to influence productivity are best focused on the team.
