Abstract:

David worked in the purest of pure probability (Brownian motion, refined measure theory, boundary theory for Markov chains). He worked in very mathematical statistics (de Finetti's theorem and its generalizations, inconsistencies of Bayes rules). He worked on the foundations of statistics (causality, Bayes methods for bookies) and on mathematical tools for applied work (bootstrap asymptotics, regression asymptotics). He thought of his mathematical work as a kind of poetry, keeping a clear distinction with applied statistics. In all he did, there is a clarity of thought and argument which makes for very fine poetry indeed.
