Abstract:

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory is researching the practicality of professional gaming to address complex problems dealing with diplomatic, information, military and economic questions. Our study focused on the military component examined tactical decision making using a small game board and naive rule set. Two graduate students working on a summer internship created, tested, played and evaluated a unique game dealing with modern warfare. The task relied on game theory, optimization, stochastics, data mining, hypothesis testing and more. The player population spanned a wide range of experiences and social strata. This talk will present interesting and telling statistical outcomes from designing a competitive game to learning the basic concepts of irregular warfare obtained from their creative design and unique approach.
