Abstract:

Progress in computer technology has revolutionized statistics. It has transformed the discipline from a dry and dusty one, characterized by the minutiae of arithmetic manipulation, to a key enabling technology---enabling understanding of the world about us. Central to this new role has been the development of statistical learning theory and methods, and the closely related discipline of data mining. In this talk I look at how these two domains have developed, what they look like now, and where they appear to be going. I look at the nature of the tools, and the drivers for future developments. We are standing, not at the peak of discovery of statistical learning and data mining advances, but on the slopes of a mountain which still reaches upward: exciting though the past few decades have been, even more exciting developments lie around the corner.
