Abstract:
|
The Lung Health Study (LHS) was a multicenter randomized clinical trial of smoking intervention and use of an inhaled bronchodilator to slow the progression of chronic obstructive disease in smokers aged 35--60. The LHS was conducted between December, 1986 and February of 1994, with 5 years of follow-up for each participant. A total of 5887 participants were randomized. At the 5th annual visit in the LHS, participants were asked to participate in a follow-up study involving telephone contacts every 6 months. Over 80% of participants agreed to this. Beginning in 1998, all LHS participants were asked to return to their clinical center for a visit that included a medical and smoking history, quality of life questionnaires, and measurement of their lung function.
