Title: Interpreting the Cumulative Frequency Distribution of Socioeconomic Data
Author(s): Othmar W. Winkler*+
Companies: Georgetown University
Address: 37th & O Streets, NW, Washington, DC, ,
Keywords: Cumulative fFrequency Distribution ; Ogive
Abstract:

Current textbooks may teach how to construct a cumulative frequency distribution or ogive, even how to use it in a measure of concentration, but fail to make sense of the economic or social situation that is reflected in the aggregated frequencies. This omission is unfortunate because the appropriate interpretation of an ogive can reveal more about an economic or social situation than the corresponding frequency distribution. With a variety of examples from business, economics and society, the author shows, that much can be learned from the cumulative frequency distributions about the ease or difficulty of access to and advancement in the corresponding segment of society. The ogive contains features about society, its established social and legal structure, that do not become apparent in the respective frequency distribution.
