Abstract:

Discriminant analysis is a multivariate technique that is concerned with the correct classification of an observation into one of k previously defined groups. This expository poster discusses the theory of discriminant analysis for the univariate case. It focuses on an extension of the univariate results to cover the multivariate discriminant case. The application of the multivariate classification procedure is demonstrated by using an electromagnetic data set. The data set involves data that was collected by a hand-held reflectometer on three plant species that were grown on the Alabama A&M University campus. The observed data was transformed to into wave length form where the wave lengths severed as variables. The application of classification rules using this data set and problems that were encountered are discussed.
