Abstract:

Distance learning formats have become more prevalent in post-secondary education, including nursing doctoral programs. This learning style has the appeal of providing degree opportunities to students in a wide geographical area, as well as increased flexibility to manage the competing demands of coursework and other time commitments. Internet-based software, such as Blackboard, facilitates interactions between the instructor and students and among groups of students by providing a venue for posting class materials, recording grades, collecting and returning assignments, and having discussions, either in real time (chat) or posted on a discussion board (forum). The primary challenge of distance learning is limited in-person interactions; this requires increased use of other methods of contact, including e-mail and phone, so students receive feedback and guidance while in the class.
