Abstract:

The significance of statistical software such as Splus/R, SAS, and SPSS in data analysis is the reason most statistics graduate programs require statistical software courses. We experimented with the idea of incorporating an industrial certificate program in a Statistical Software course at an urban private university. We chose the SAS certification program since there exists a comprehensive certification program from entry level to advanced programming. The goal of this curriculum development study was to include the certification exam into the classroom teaching environment, to identify difficult study topics, and to find approaches to improve the learning outcome. In addition to the campus study, a preliminary nationwide survey was conducted to explore the students' learning experience and the instructors' teaching experience.
