Abstract:

Refractive laser eye surgery, e.g. Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and Laser-Assisted Sub-Epithelial Keratectomy (LASEK), has been performed by ophthalmologists here at West Point for several years. Eligible patients include junior and senior cadets and active-duty military members. Questions of interest to the Academy, the Army, and the ophthalmologic surgery community addressed include: How are Army branch choices affected by the availability of laser vision correction? Are there differences in post-graduation military training between treated and non-treated cadets? How does the West Point population compare to other groups? Additionally, we reviewed the existing nomogram (graphical computation device) used in programming the laser for eye surgery and recommended changes based on simulation modeling using historical outcomes and follow-up data.
