Abstract:

I present pedagogical material that I have developed for a course in statistical thinking that addresses the subject from a liberal arts perspective. It has been argued that statistics is an appropriate addition to the liberal arts curricula due to its broad applicability across disciplines, its emphasis on careful and reasoned thinking, and its ability to prepare students to contribute meaningfully to society. To demonstrate to the student that statistics is just as fundamental to understanding and appreciating the world as art, literature, language, and science, the course material is specially designed to highlight the sheer sensibility behind common statistical methods, and also covers the practical history behind them. To support learning, I have created a web page containing links to all course material as well as a discussion board for weekly participation assignments.
