Abstract:

The Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) is a nationally representative panel survey of the U.S. civilian noninstitutionalized population. The annual survey collects information to produce estimates of health care use, health status, health conditions, medical expenditures, sources of payment, insurance coverage, and health care access for the nation as well as for policy-relevant subgroups. The MEPS has a complex survey design that uses the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) as the sampling frame. The NHIS has a stratified, multistage area probability design and the MEPS sample is selected from households that responded to the prior year's NHIS. Design effects are used as a measure of precision to help assess the quality of survey estimates. In this study, design effects for various MEPS survey estimates by selected population subgroups will be examined for 2001 through 2008.
