Abstract:

The mission of the Office of Pesticide Programs (OPP, within the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA)) is to protect public health and the environment from unreasonable adverse effects resulting from the use of pesticides and to assure that there is a reasonable certainty of no harm from pesticides in the diet of all Americans. This paper will identify the statistical methods utilized to assess potential ecological risk from pesticides proposed for registration. Methods for the evaluation of environmental fate and toxicology data, as well as for deterministic and probabilistic risk assessment will be highlighted. Finally, some ways in which the Environmental Fate and Effects Division (EFED) is using statistics to improve our methodologies, such as new ecotoxicological testing guidelines and environmental sampling protocols, will be considered.
