Abstract:

The Snellen chart is the traditional eye chart that has been used by health care professionals to assess visual acuity since the late 1800's. It consists of ten block letters: C, D, E, F, L, N, O, P, T and Z arranged in a series of rows. A patient covers one eye and reads aloud the letters on each row. Beginning at the top (with the largest letters) the patient proceeds down the chart to the smallest row that they can accurately read. A standard Snellen chart is inexpensive to obtain and can be mounted on the classroom wall. In this talk the authors will present how a Snellen chart can be used to illustrate how to design an experiment and collect data in a classroom. In addition, the authors will show how this data can be used to demonstrate the t-test, ANOVA and nonparametric testing.
