Abstract:

Abdominal adiposity (AO) is an important component of the metabolic syndrome. AO is also linked with increased risks of breast, colorectal and renal cell cancers. The gold standard for measuring AO is assessment by imaging techniques such as magnetic resonance and computed tomography. However these methods are laborious and expensive, and often not suitable for large-scale epidemiologic or population-based studies. Hence, an anthropometric surrogate, such as waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, and waist-to-height ratio are often employed. Many epidemiologic studies linking abdominal obesity with diseases, including cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes often do not account for overall body heaviness as defined by body mass index. This presentation is designed to review various methods that have been suggested for correcting for BMI in the association of AO and diseases.
