Abstract:
|
The STATISTICS FOR HEALTHCARE class at the University of Central Oklahoma has added a small unit on quality concepts. This is motivated by a JCAHO requirement that hospitals discriminate between common and special variability in specified processes; ideas from authors such as D. Lynn Kelley and Raymond Carey; and from our perceived desire of nurses to focus on individual patients as opposed to groups of patients which reflects the current emphasis in evidence based practice. We focus on common vs. special variability, stable vs. unstable processes, and the use of control charts. The main goals of this class have included teaching students to correctly interpret statistical content in professional nursing journals, and to be able to correctly identify appropriate vs. inappropriate statistical tests for use in a given scenario. We seek input in order to continuously improve our class.
