Abstract:

Actigraphy is an inexpensive but sensitive and accurate method recommended by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (ASSM) to evaluate circadian patterns of activity, sleep, and fatigue. An actigraph is a watch-like device that is commonly attached to the wrist and uses an accelerometer to measure movements nearly continuously over several days. We describe in this paper the first time functional data analysis (FDA) methods have been used to analyze actigraphy data. Different from conventional summary statistics and existing actigraphy analysis tools, functional data analysis allows us to study in more depth patterns of activity and quantification of fatigue. In this paper, we illustrate the use of functional data analysis using pilot data on 20 subjects from the Washington University CNS HIV Anti-Retroviral Therapy Effects Research (CHARTER) site.
