Abstract:

Although the negative impact of abdominal obesity on health (e.g., cardiovascular disease) is well recognized, the best way to assess it is still a topic of debate. Waist circumference, waist to hip ratio, conicity, and abdominal volume index are measures that attempt to measure abdominal obesity. Waist circumference is problematic as it is not the same indicator of abdominal obesity in different ethnic groups. Waist to hip ratio may underestimate the risk in those with high hip circumference. Coinicity and abdominal volume index are promising abdominal obesity measures, however are not commonly used in clinical practice. A thorough comparison of these measures in terms of their predictability of relevant health events using Receiver Operator Curves is warranted to guide policymaking and address the question which of these measures is most beneficial for research and clinical practice.
