Abstract:

Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) is a collection of methods for collecting human behavioral data in real time in the subjects' environments. Subjects may record discrete behavioral events as they happen on hand-held electronic diaries, and the electronic diaries may prompt subjects to answer questions regarding their current psychological states and their environments. The richness of the available data from EMA studies poses a number of opportunities for statistical research. Methods are required for describing the effects of time-varying covariates on momentary outcomes among subjects, diurnal patterns, temporal correlations among repeated, and variation among subjects in their response to time-varying covariates. I will describe a general approach to analyzing the pattern of repeated discrete behavioral events, illustrating it on an EMA of smoking behavior.
