Abstract:

How do you choose an introductory statistics text? This important task is often left to an ad hoc appraisal. It is often only after adopting and using a text does one discover its strengths and weaknesses. We propose a method for evaluating texts based on GAISE for the introductory statistics course. The method involves a rubric for evaluating text material and exercises consistent with GAISE ideals. A stratified sampling scheme is proposed for randomly selecting a few pages and a few exercises from each chapter. The rubric can then be used to evaluate how closely the sample pages and exercises follow GAISE. An estimate of how closely the entire text follows GAISE is then obtained using standard sampling results. The method is used to evaluate several commonly used texts for the introductory statistics course.
