Abstract:

Are you wasting your money when you book your flight? Nobody wants to gamble by choosing a flight that will have a high likelihood to be late. By utilizing the multivariate analysis and graphical techniques, we analyze the 2009 Expo data set to discover some patterns about the delayed flights according to time, locations, and different carriers, among other factors. In order to consider the impact of unexpected events, we further compare the pattern of the airline on-time performance before and after 9/11 and before and after the 2007 financial crisis. We try to show a reasonable way to pick a flight based on whether or not an unexpected event has recently occurred . Visualizing the airline on-time performance gives an interested travelers information in making a smart decision on booking, and also motivates airlines to find ways to improve their performance.
