Abstract:

The naturalistic driving study is an innovative way of studying driver behavior by instrumenting vehicles and continuously monitoring driver's behavior through recording video and kinematic information. The study provides huge amount of information but also calls for novel statistical analysis method. In this paper, a case-crossover design method was used to quantitatively evaluating the risk of driver behavior such as distraction, cell phone usage, and drowsiness. A conditional logistic regression model was developed to modeling the safety outcomes, which includes crash and near-crash. The method was applied to the 100-Car study, which was collected from 100 participant vehicles for one year period. The results of this study will provides insight on safety impacts of driver behavior and addresses methodology issues for naturalistic driving study.
