Abstract:
|
The recent debate on the issue of over-education calls for quantitative methods for assessing the effectiveness of PhD programs. In Italy, several surveys have been recently conducted on this topic, with special regard on the occupational chances of the PhD graduates. We exploit such data to investigate a relevant aspect of external effectiveness, namely the consistency of the job of PhD graduates with their education, in particular the extent to which they use the skills acquired in their PhD program. The degree of consistency is self-assessed by the interviewed graduates, thus generating an ordinal response variable. The analysis relies on a multilevel model that takes into account the clustering of the graduates into PhD programs and allows us to classify the programs according to the level of effectiveness.
