Abstract:

We study longitudinal relational data from a cohort of first-year students in a graduate program at a large university. A survey at the time of enrollment measured students' demographic characteristics, preliminary academic interests, and plans to work with particular faculty members. Monthly surveys during the school year recorded their ongoing relationships with other students and faculty, as well as their changing research interests. We investigate the social network structure for these research subjects using statistical models. Specifically, we apply Exponential Random Graph Models (ERGM) to nine months of data on different relationships. This approach allows us to observe outcomes of homophily and transitivity within each month, as well as describe patterns in homophily and transitivity over time. Lastly, we compare these dynamic patterns across different substantive relations.
