Abstract:

Oscar Kempthorne was born on January 31, 1919 in St. Tudy, Cornwall, a small farming village located in the southwest corner of the United Kingdom. He dreamed of a more meaningful life and that dream pushed him all of the way to Cambridge University where he was introduced to R. A. Fisher's work in statistics. Fisher's work sparked a life-long love of statistics in Kempthorne and he consequently became one of the most influential statisticians of his time, contributing greatly to the areas of experimental design, genetic statistics, and the philosophy of statistics. This poster will highlight Oscar Kempthorne's life, from his humble beginnings to his well accomplished career, paying particular attention to his contributions to statistics and the Iowa State University Statistics Department, where he spent most of his career. This is one of six posters in the History of Statistics.
