Abstract:

Control charts and process capability measures are key components for effective process management and improvement. These tools are either not applied or applied improperly in many organizations because leaders and users don't fully understand the fundamental principles of these tools. This work illustrates a unique interactive learning aid that shows the increased ability to detect assignable cause in the progression from raw data through time series charts, run charts, and control charts. Student generated data are used to illustrate the concept of control limits. A third region on the learning aid is used to visually assess assumptions. A major stumbling block for novices is distinguishing between specification limits and control limits. This learning aid addresses this issue and permits a graphical determination of process capability without additional calculations.
