Abstract:

In this paper, we investigate juvenile delinquency and recidivism in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, through the ProDES database developed by the Crime and Justice Research Institute at Temple University. ProDES is a case-based sample of 45,585 cases, where the cases had been adjudicated in family court during 1994-2004. We reduced the data set to a juvenile-based analysis of 6,768 males and added geographical features. We applied a plaid-clustering algorithm to carry out a two-way cluster analysis in which a sequence of subsets ("layers") of both juveniles and variables are simultaneously extracted from the data, but that the layers are allowed to overlap with each other. We show that juveniles within layers can be viewed as spatially clustered. Statistical relationships of the variables and juveniles within each layer are then studied.
