Abstract:

Wildlife and fisheries diseases are currently undergoing very serious study. Quantitative methods for studying these diseases have often focused on the disease process itself rather than the sampling process. This research focuses on estimating key parameters in a wildlife and fisheries disease setting through the joint use of data collected via capture-resight and cross sectional count sampling methods. Combining these two types of data together allows for robust estimation of the key parameters (including detection rates that vary across state). In preliminary analyses via simulation and also via real data, this approach has generally produced more precise estimates of the parameters than using capture-resight data alone. Future directions of research could deal with state uncertainty involved with mis-classified or unobservable disease states.
